The bike bus is rolling
The bike bus is rolling
This is a parent-led meetup, not a CCC program. Families organize it between themselves — the route, the timing, who rides, who leads. The Coyote Community Club hosts the tools below the way it hosts anything else families use. It does not run the ride, supervise it, or provide equipment for it.
A bike bus is a group of families riding to school together on a set route, at a set time, with grown-ups riding along. Children who are not old enough to ride to school alone can ride to school with everybody else, and the adults get a morning outside instead of a queue in the car line.
This one leaves from a neighborhood stop early enough to reach school before the bell, picking up along the way. The route and the times go to the families riding it rather than on this page — they are somebody's street and somebody's front door at a known hour.
What the tracker does
A live map. Whoever is leading that morning shares their location while they ride, so families further along the route can watch the bus approach instead of standing at the curb guessing. It stops the moment they stop sharing, and nothing is kept afterwards.
Roughly how long until your stop. Times are honest about being rough — a straight line from where the bus last checked in, at a loaded-bike pace. Treat them as "soon" rather than a timetable.
A week at a glance. Each morning shows the forecast, the low temperature an early start actually meets, the chance of rain, and whether it is a good day for it. Tap a day to say you are coming.
Your usual plan. Set the days you normally ride once and the week fills itself in. You can still change any single morning.
There and back. Some families ride in and get collected by car. You can say how many are riding in and how many are riding home, because they are often not the same number — one parent takes both children in, the other collects.
Children in trailers and bucket seats count as riders. They are on the bike bus, they are eating the snacks, and the driver is counting heads at the curb rather than wheels.
Riding without a parent. A child old enough to ride without their own grown-up can be signed up by their parent, who names the adult on the bus keeping an eye on them. That adult is asked first and has to say yes. This tells the driver who to expect — the school still decides who a child leaves with, the same as signing in at the office.
How to join
The bike bus is invite only, because the tracker shows where a group of children are at a known time each morning, and the route runs past the houses of the families on it. That is not something to leave open to anybody who makes an account.
- Make an account on this site, if you have not already.
- Ask to join from the bike bus page. It takes a sentence — who you are and which part of the neighborhood you are coming from.
- One of the families already riding lets you in, and then you can see the route, the times and the map.
If your street is not on the route yet, say so when you ask. Stops get added.
Leading a morning
Anyone riding can lead. On a wet Tuesday the person who actually sets off is whoever is on the bike. Open the page, tap to start sharing, and stop when you get there.
Nothing runs in the background and nothing is stored after the ride. A school-run tracker that keeps reporting once the ride is over is a tracking device, and this is not one.
